More than a Number

It seems like everyone is on a weight-loss program or diet. Everywhere you go, there are advertisements on how to lose weight and slim down. The weight loss industry in the United States is a sixty six BILLION dollar industry. Society is obsessed with weight.

But it's just a number.

and honestly...

I'm guilty of this obsession.

When I was little my brother mocked me because of my weight. I was a little heavier, but I didn't even notice or care until my brother told me I was fat. I remember one time when he was making fun of my weight, I told him, "Weight doesn't matter, because it's just how much force of gravity used to hold me down to the earth". That didn't matter to him... the number still made me fat.

Throughout high school I struggled with the number on the scale after. I lost a lot of weight, lost too much, gained some back, lost a little more, gained a little... you get the picture. My senior year was when I hit my lowest weight. I finally felt "good enough" because I was slim and just over 110 pounds. My doctor, however, ended that little blurp of feeling good when he warned me that I was too thin. For years after, I continued to worry about the number on the scale, letting it define who I was.

But it's just a number.

When I focus so much energy on a number, I elevate weight and numbers to be more important than they deserve to be.

Weight is just a number.

It doesn't define my worth; Christ does.

A few weeks ago I decided to stop stepping on the scale. I realized that all it does is make me feel insecure. Basing my worth on the number I see makes me feel unworthy EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

So I ditched the scale. I said good bye to basing my worth on a measure that has no place defining me.

Christ defines me. I am a child of the King. I am perfect because He made me perfect.

If any of you struggle with your weight or feeling defined by the number on the scale, I want you to know you aren't alone. I fight that same battle, but I am here to tell you, you are worth more than a single number.

You are a child of God. You are chosen, free, forgiven, wanted, a child of the King, His forever, held in His treasure and He loves you.
